The 2017 Lexus LC 500 Coupé Stuns at Detroit Auto Show

Japanese auto manufacturers tend to be traditionalists and are often slow to make major changes to successful products. But on the first day of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Lexus threw caution to the wind by unveiling the all-new Lexus LC500, a breakthrough coupé that clearly rockets the global automotive brand into a new era. Simply put, it’s Lexus’ first radical car concept to ultimately be built for the marketplace. And it's one badass car.

Out of the Box: Lexus Creates Full-Size, Drivable Cardboard IS Sedan

In a move that could be interpreted as taking weight savings to an extreme—or, alternately, as a move downmarket with a special-edition model to be sold exclusively at Walmart—Lexus has unveiled a unique IS sedan made entirely of cardboard.

Given all that, you might think that with the all-new, fourth-generation RX, Lexus would be satisfied to build on the vehicle’s strengths.

2016 Lexus LX570

With only one refresh since its last major makeover for 2008, Lexus’s LX570 SUV was ripe for updates. The problem, if you can call it one, is that people genuinely liked it the way it was. Sharing its sturdy and capable underpinnings with the Toyota Land Cruiser and offering opulent interior furnishings with a comparatively demure exterior, it’s truly a luxury SUV. But while the LX was busy holding its ground, competitors like theMercedes-Benz GL-class, the Land Rover Range Rover, and the Cadillac Escalade were hard at work, developing new engines and transmissions, entering new generations, and getting sassier aesthetics. It was time.
