Subaru Viziv Future hybrid EV concept will debut in Tokyo (images)
16:24The Subaru Viziv Future concept offers a glimpse into the future of sport utility vehicles as Subaru sees it. Many compact SUV’s and crossover vehicles today emphasize styling over utility, but the Viziv concept goes against that trend. Its boxy styling is designed to maximize interior room and load handling ability.
The design caters to people who enjoy active outdoor sports like biking. The rear bench folds down to reveal a bike rack integrated into the trunk floor. A second bike rack is concealed under the trunk floor and accessed by sliding out the bottom part of the rear bumper. That’s clever thinking.
The Viziv Future will highlight Subaru’s EyeSight autonomous driving technology. It uses sensors, radar, and cameras to constantly monitor the road, allowing the VIZIV Future to drive completely autonomously at freeway speeds. EyeSight can also avoid accidents by detecting obstacles in the road, and it allows the SUV to park itself in even the tightest spots.
The concept car uses a hybrid powertrain with a small turbocharged flat four gasoline engine for the front wheels and an electric motor for the rear wheels. There is no mechanical connection between the engine and the motor.
The interior of the concept car is accessed via suicide doors. The entertainment, connectivity, climate control and navigation functions are all grouped into a large touchscreen located at the top of the center stack. Vital information about the car and its surroundings is displayed on a digital instrument cluster made up of four pods.
There is no word on whether the Viziv Future concept will see production, but many of its systems and features should be incorporated into Subaru’s production cars in coming years. The autonomous driving suite is expected to be available in Subaru automobiles by the year 2020.
