Cadillac says a more compact XT4 crossover will be coming in 2018
00:12The American luxury automaker has just unveiled the all new XT5 crossover – successor for the very successful XTS sport ute – and during the LA Auto Show they also hinted towards the unveil of a smaller family member in 2018.
During his speech at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the brand’s president Johan de Nysschen commented for the media representatives there would be a new crossover slotted beneath the XT5 and its development has been hastened as the compact crossover segment grows ever more popular each year. Tentatively named XT4 (moniker not confirmed), the envisioned smaller sport utility vehicle would go against premium competitors such as the BMW X3 and the Lexus NX. But we won’t see the new model before 2018 and that means the earliest official public introduction could be slated during a major auto show sometimes in the latter part of 2017.
The Cadillac boss also talked about the “obvious gap” between the new XT5 and the Escalade, meaning the company is also mulling the addition of a larger, new three-row model to fill the customer needs. That one would also have major issues appealing to the customers as it would have to fend off against already present rivals such as the second generation Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90 – though this one is even further slated into the future and we may not see it in production form before the second half of 2018 or early 2019. And coming back to Europe might also be an option once the company sets loose around the start of the coming decade an even smaller SUV that would compete with the likes of BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
