BMW’s Stunning New i8 Spyder Concept Has No Doors—Here’s Why

BMW’S i Vision Future Interaction is the latest concept car by the German automakers. It’s similar to their i8 Spyder besides one distinct difference – the i Vision has no doors.

The ambitious concept is topless and doorless, giving the sports car a luxurious look. The interior of the vehicle is equally as innovative, controlled through a 21-inch screen that can be used by either the passenger or driver. The gesture control system, AirTouch, is an evolution of the system that debuted in the 2016 BMW 7-Series. The upgraded system now adds subtle convenient features, like switching to video calls when the car is in self-driving mode and back to audio when the driver takes the wheel. It still retains all the controllable navigation, communication and entertainment functions using gestures.

The i Vision also utilizes BMW’s planned autonomous driving system with three different modes: Pure Driving (the driver is in charge), Assist (the system intervenes on occasion) and Auto Mode (fully automated). It does sound like BMW is phasing the driver out of the driving equation, but they insist this car will still be fun to drive.
